Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

Today's game featured two halves that were as different as night and day. The first half was all Northwestern State. The Demons outgained the Bison something like 243 to 47 yards and went in at halftime leading 17-7. The second half was all NDSU, during which they outgained their opponents about 225 yards to 70 and outscored them 23-0. It appeared that the coaching staff did their best job of the season adjusting the their opponent both defensively and offensively. NDSU racked up about 120 yards rushing against the #1 DIAA rushing defense in the country, and this was all accomplished without running one "bubble" screen, last weeks constant disaster. The Bison offensive attack also passed the ball very effectively in the second half.

The biggest story of the game was three Bison take aways, two interceptions and a fumble recovery, versus no give aways. Jayd Kittelson (selected BI Defensive Player of the Game) lead the way with one of the interceptions and the fumble recovery. I think the Bison, in this game, served notice to the rest of the DIAA football world that they are and will be a force to be reckoned with now and in the future and that 3 years from now the road to the DIAA championship just may go through Fargo.

Although the Bison offense sputtered mightily in the first half, the Bison staff stuck with Steve Walker and he did shine in the second half. Walker's enthusiasm for the game is apparent just watching him play the game. I noticed him down field blocking for running plays and it was clear he has a presence in the huddle with his teammates. The only Bison offensive highlight of the first half was a spectacular double reverse pass with Ohio's own Nick Jackson hooking up with none other than Steve Walker on a perfect 20 yard or so pass play.

We selected Steve Walker as the BI Offensive Player of the Game in his first start. His mobility and passing accuracy made a huge difference in this game. He also had the unique distinction of catching one TD pass and throwing for two more.

One other note about this game. Dwight Summerville scored his second safety of his Bison career. Thanks Mr. Summerville for coming to North Dakota State and giving us those thrills.

We would be remiss to not say thank you to the other 10 senior starters who were among a group of 20 seniors appearing at their last game in the dome.

So it's on to Ogden, Utah next Saturday afternoon for a matchup with Weber State.
