In their first game ever played in the state of Louisiana and in what North Dakotan's would consider very oppressive conditions, the Bison proved equal to the task and defeated Nicholl's state 24-14. It turned out to be a hardfought game of smash mouth football staged in enemy territory, in an outdoor stadiium on real grass and the Bison won, much to the apparent amazement of Mike McFeely. To those of you that don't know who Mike McFeely is, he is a sportswriter for the Fargo Forum, blessed with cynicism, amazing 20/20 hindsight and the rare personal quality of having no conscience. He made the statement that the Craig Bohl's Bison can't win important games on the road, I guess because the Bison lost a couple road games in overtime last year. He seems to stay up nights finding stuff to put in his columns to try to embarass or belittle somebody. Enough about him. Let's talk about the victory.
For the second straight game, the Bison played an option team, and I thought played this team better defensively than the first. They held the Colonels to less than half of their 313 yard per game rushing average and in the process collected four turnovers, interceptions by Gorman and Babich and fumble recoveries by Summerville and Dahl.
They were held to 24 points by an obviously strong defensive team. I think the strongest the Bison have faced including Northern Colorado. Their defensive line and linebackers were quick and physical. They were putting pressure on Stauss all day and in general taking the wide running plays away.
The greatest Bison success came when they ran straight at them. Steffes was particularly successful, taking it up the middle and then cutting the way the blocking allowed him to. He had a great game. Tony Stauss seemed to feel the pressure and didn't seem to be as crisp as the past couple of games. He did have some really good throws, especially to Burrell and Cooper.
The coaching staff ran a lot of people in and kept them as fresh as possible. Actually, the home town Colonels were the ones cramping up at the end of the game.
The Bison shot themselves in the foot a few times with penalties, particularly when they ruined a couple of nice returns, one each by Burrell and Washington. I'm not sure that they changed the final score but they certainly did create uneasiness in the Bison faithful. But those things happen and you learn from them and go on.
So what did they Bison take away from this game? I think they gained a little confidence in themselves, winning against an established IAA program in the enemy stadium. It seems that Gorman and Babich are getting better all the time. Kyle Steffes is establishing himself as a bigtime running back. Also, they seem to be feeling it with their return game. I think they are starting to feel that they can take any given kickoff or punt to the house.
So now on to the players of the game. We think both were painfully obvious. Kyle Steffes earned the BI Offensive Player of the Game. Craig Dahl earned the BI Defensive Player of the Game. Next week its off to Brookings and the battle for the "Marker".
