It was everything that you could imagine what an opening night in a new division should have. A huge crowd, an exciting pregame, a crushing win. About the only thing that went wrong was the public address announcer constantly screwing up the players names. The game itself was a triumph of Bison talent, preparation and coaching. You can say all you want about the weakness of the Bison opponent, and maybe in the future the opposition may be a little more worthy, but what does a good team do when they are supposed to win? You don't just mail it in, you dazzle the crowd, and thats exactly what the Bison did.
Showing speed, strength and talent, the Bison crushed the Crusaders 52-0. The Bison ground game was exemplary. Kyle Steffes did what we know Kyle can do, he ran roughshod over his opponents, but the most revealing thing in the game was the Bison depth in the offensive line and at runningback. Barring injury or other misfortune, Shamen Washington will be a legend at NDSU before his four years are up. Cinque Chapman lived up to his billing and then some and Mark Moore showed us they didn't waste the scholarship money on him. Tony Stauss struggled a little, but he made two throws that stood out, a fade route to Travis White and a slant to Allen Burrell. They were as good as it gets. The throw to White was a beautiful touchdown and the slant went for big yards. Steve Walker threw his first of what probably will be many touchdown passes, a 13 yard strike to Andrew Cooper III.
The Bison played everyone on defense and still never allowed Valpo's great passing game to get untracked. You could point a finger at everyone or anyone in the defensive lineup. They all had great games and showed us that great defense is a consummate team effort. Their were 25 Bison who registered at least one unassisted tackle and 29 that had at least one assist. Valpo never crossed mid field and the Bison picked off three Joe Milazzo passes and registered four sacks. They limited the opponent's offense to some 180 yards of total offense.
Special teams were just that, special. Cory Vartanian was flawless kicking off and placekicking and the kickoff coverage was fantastic pinning the Crusaders deep in their own territory every kickoff. And Shamen Washington, wow, what a first college football game. He amassed 165 total yards punt returning and rushing. Also, if you were paying attention, Bill Wrigley had a heckuva night covering kickoffs.
So, what did the Bison bring out of this game? I think the most important thing was Kyle Steffes showing he was back from his injury. And he certainly is. He earned the BI offensive player of the game. The second thing was Shamen Washington. He could be a very big weapon. The third thing was Mike Dragosavitch. They have a new punter. On the defensive side, we thought Kole Zimmerman earned the BI defensive player of the game.
And now it's on to Nottingham Field and Greeley, Colorado for the Bison's first Great West conference game.
