The Measuring Stick
The Weber-NDSU game tape will be filed under two headings. The first heading will be "Complete Team Efforts" and the second will be "Blitzing Made Easy". This game was a great example of coaching, especially defense, and preparing a team for an opponent. Todd Wash is to be complimented for his use of constant defensive pressure to crack a team and its quarterback. The Bison offense, defense and special teams all contributed last evening making it a three pronged attack. The talent on this team is becoming very evident. There are just a lot of good football players out there.
The stats say the green and yellow had 6 sacks, but that didn't tell the whole story. The pressure was constant and intense. The Bison were led by the kid from Chicago, Joe Mays and one of Yanktons finest, Justin Frick. Mays is starting to hit his stride, he's all over the field. Certainly not overshadowed in the NDSU defense is my choice for All-American, Craig Dahl. He is playing as good as any safety in the country. Also making his first big splash as a Bison, Barry Quickstad picked off a Pizzaro pass late in the game. Dahl was the victim of one of the most incredible cheap shots I have ever seen. He had just made a tackle on the sideline and as a stood up, the guy he had tackled, just hauled off and swatted him in the, ahem, shall we say, family jewels. Needless to say, Craig was a little uncomfortable. But of course the Bison defense prevailed in the end, playing a very big role in the 41-0 pasting of Weber State. Contributing to the Bison total of 41 points was Isaac Lavant who recovered a Weber fumble inside the 5 yard line and carried it into the endzone. That was the third Bison defensive touchdown on the year, and the first for Lavant.
On the offensive side of the ball, Kyle Steffes gained 179 yards in just 19 carries, a gaudy 9.4 yards per carry. The 179 yard toal eclipsed, by three yards, his total of 176 yards in last years Weber game. Steve Walker had a good first half, showing incredible accuracy with a couple of his completions. He did seem to struggle in the third quarter, missing the mark several times, one of the few NDSU shortcomings on the night. The great Shamen did it again last night, returning a punt for a touchdown. He has to be at the least, one of the best in IAA, if not the best. How are you going to keep Mark Moore out of the game? He shined in his fourth quarter appearance last night moving the ball down the field and scoring the final Bison touchdown. The Wildcats had 9 or 10 men in the box most of the time.
Players of the Game
The BI Defensive and Offensive Players of the game were no brainers. They were, of course, Joe Mays and Kyle Steffes respectively.
Holiday Vibes
The Bison defense has outscored their three opponents offenses 3 touchdowns to two. Attendance at the game last evening was nearly 15,000. Dragosavich punted for over a 50 yard average, with a couple of moon shots. Every chance he gets DE Joe Lardinois shows us how good he is and will be.
Is anyone else getting the feeling that Northern Colorado is joining a weaker football conference? From the looks of things so far, Great West front-runners Cal Poly and NDSU would also be the top teams in the Big Sky Conference.
Go Bison!!
