Today's game was an entertaining game, played in an abolutely magnificent setting, resulting in a Bison road win, and it also produced a personal best for one of the Bison players. It doesn't get any better than this. This is college football at its finest. Today's 31-17 win was not a blowout or a dominating performance, but it seemed like the game was never really in doubt, probably because the Bison never trailed. A quick strike, mostly the result of a 53 yard Walker to White pass, put the Bison in front early in the first quarter and they never looked back.
The Bison defense was tested with the Weber State offense racking up 355 yards in total offense to go along with their fine return team performances. NDSU only came up with one turnover, but when you don't turn the ball over at all, that's enough. In general, the Bison stopped them when they needed to. In a slight departure from normal practice, punter Mike Dragosavitch was selected as the BI Defensive Player of the Game. Mike just seems to be getting better and better and most certainly was a decisive factor in todays game.
On offense, the Bison are doing what they forgot to do under Tony Stauss, they are winning with their rushing attack. This strategy resulted in Kyle Steffes gaining a personal best 176 yards in just 21 carries I believe. Because of that Kyle was selected as the BI Offensive Player of the Game. For the second straight game, Steve Walker played under control and did not throw any interceptions. His play has been exemplary and a joy to watch.
The special teams play left a little something to be desired and kept us on the edge of our seats practically every time they took the field. They did however come up with the one turnover, with Jake Johnson recovered a fumbled kickoff.
The only flies in my ointment right now are those three blown games, seemingly the result of poor quarterback play and even poorer play calling. We could have been 10-0 right now (or should I say SHOULD have been 10-0) going into the season finale with 9-1 Cal-Davis. That would have been exciting. But in spite of that, its been a wonderful season, one we'll remember for a long time.
This is the last "Reaction to the Action" column for me this year. Next week and weekend will find myself and some of my cronies nestled in a cabin deep in the Black Hills of South Dakota on a deer hunting trip. So good luck Bison out in Davis!!
