The names of the great runningbacks at NDSU make a very long list, and as a group and also individually they are eternally intertwined in Bison lore. They each also represent a distinct era of storied Bison football. They were the hearts of the teams, be it the pro style I attack, the vaunted Bison veer, or the current West Coast offense. Young men bearing the names Bruce Airheart, Tim Mjos, Paul Hatchett, James Molstre, Chad Stark, Marty Sieh, Tony Satter, Jake Morris, Lamar Gordon, Rod Malone, among others, have carried the football for NDSU and had their names etched in the Bison history book. It appears the time has come for the next great runningback or backs to appear on the NDSU stage (also known as the Fargodome) and write their own story.
So whose era will it be now? Lets look at the possibilities. The first, of course, is sophomore Kyle Steffes. He appears poised for greatness. He has been a winner his entire high school and college career. In a great high school program at Trinity in Dickinson and continuing during his redshirt freshman year, until he was injured, he has run roughshod over the competition. If he is recovered from his broken ankle, I see no reason that won’t continue.
Next we have a foursome of redshirt freshman, any one of which is capable of complementing or following Steffes, or if Steffes should fall, replacing him. They are, in no particular order Mark Moore, Symeon Cabell, Alex Wiese, and Cinque Chapman. Mark Moore is a great athlete that came to NDSU from a fairly obscure high school program, Sherwood high school, in the Milwaukee area. His best games may still be ahead of him. Symeon Cabell comes to NDSU as the latest of a long list of great runningbacks that have been produced in Wisconsin’s Runningback High, Cudahy high school in Milwaukee. You may remember another of their alumni; current St. Louis Ram, Lamar Gordon. Alex Wiese has the body of a prototypical DIAA runningback. He is big, fast and strong. He comes to the Bison from LaCrescent, Minnesota. Last and certainly not least is “lightning in a bottle”, Cinque Chapman from Morgan Park high school in the Chicago Metro area. His stats and accomplishments in high school are as legendary as the great Jake Morris. He averaged over 12 yards per carry while racking up 2450 yards his senior year.
There are a couple of true freshman we have to add to the list, the two Tylers, Roehl and Jangula. Roehl is out of a great West Fargo program. He led his team to a state title last fall. The other Tyler, Tyler Jangula is a great athlete out of Williston High School in northwest North Dakota. Both are fullback types that could be very important cogs in the Bison football wheel.
I expect one or more of these young men will step forward and write that next chapter in the Bison annals. They say that championship football is built from the ground up. The future is bright.
