Texas Forever

Hello… Live from Dallas, Texas…. It’s Rich Stevens reporting. Just down here in Redneck Villa visiting the in-laws and enjoying all of the Dallas Cowboy hoopla… Not. Life on the road can be a real pain in the caboose, as the Bison found out last weekend in Greeley. But my mother always said I must learn from my mistakes. So what did the Bison coaching staff, players, and fans learn last Saturday? First, we all found out that we have a capable back-up quarterback in Steve Walker. Completing all ten of his passes and showing mobility not seen since Steve Feeney, Walker almost led the Bison to a ‘Montana-like’ comeback (a.k.a. Tony Stauss). So don’t give up on Stauss, sometimes people expect too much from themselves and become their biggest critic. My advice to Tony…. Just play and have fun. Second, Tim Albin still has much to learn about the Bison offense. In the first NDSU offensive series, the Bison ran the ball so effectively that the Bears were resting on their heels. Mr. Albin, don’t give the other team time to adjust and keep stuffing the ball down their throat. What happens? Interception and then Northern Colorado adjusted. Just a case, were the offensive coordinator is trying to be too cute. Third, the Bison defense is pretty darn good. The only area of concern is a lack of pass rush by the defensive line (w/o blitzing). The big question mark before the season, the secondary, was stellar. Believe it or not, Bobby Babich is a star in the making. Stick the tape back in the VCR and watch…. Fourth, the depth of this year’s NDSU football team is more than adequate. AJ Cooper, Cinque Chapman, Joe Mays, and on and on…. Fifth, Travis White is the real go to guy at wide receiver. Surprise or not, Burrell and Johnson haven’t lived up to their billing. White has picked up the slack in a big way.

So what about these UNC Bears…. Are they really good or did they just steal a win away from the Bison? This week the Bears travel to Orono, in hopes of stealing yet another win from the Maine Black Bears. Maine suffered a loss in their first game of the year to the University of Montana last Saturday by a score of 27-20 and are understandably a little bit testy. The Northern Colorado football team on the other hand is just relieved to have one win under their belt. This game will be decided by which bear is the hungriest. If this game is simply a battle of the stomach…. Maine 27, Northern Colorado 18

I’ve always said there is nothing worse than an injured ego. I don’t know if I’d want to be member of the Montana Tech secondary this Saturday. Bison QB Tony Stauss has a big chip on his shoulder…. 300 yards passing against the Diggers isn’t out of the question. That’s if Tony is in the game long enough…. Every faze of the game favors the Bison. Should be a no brainer… Right?…. No question…. NDSU 59, Montana Tech 13
