Game Of The Week.... UC Davis (4-3) at South Dakota State (4-3) Okay, I'll say it. The Jackrabbits now have my respect... they're good, baby. But as a new Saturday approaches, will the Bunnies add to my already soaring respect by handing a setback to the Aggies of UC Davis? The Jacks offense appears to be far better than anyone's expectations, but the Aggies defense has exceeded my expectations. So we'll have a down home slugfest this coming Saturday in Brookings. I'll call the offenses even, but give a slight edge to the UC Davis defense. The special teams edge goes to the Aggies, while the home field +4 is in the Jacks column of the ledger. So in other words, this game could go either way. But the crystal ball tells me the Jacks' luck will come to an abrupt end... UC Davis 24, South Dakota State 23.
The Truth Is....
Please tell me how the Bison lost the game against the Minnesota Rodents? NDSU deserved to win the game. I predicted a score of NDSU 34, Minnesota 17. Even though some thought my prediction was a little crazy (I love email), the final statistics proved that my score was right on the money. So what happened? Quite frankly, untimely penalties and turnovers cost the best team the victory. George Perles, the former great Michigan State coach and father of current Bison offensive coordinator Pat Perles, summed it up properly... NDSU could give a lot of Big Ten football teams problems. Maybe the Bison are playing in the wrong conference after all... it's always nice to dream.
This week the Bison travel to the great state of Utah to face the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds. Are the Bison tough enough? Ya, I know, a terrible pun. The common theme this week pertaining to the Bison is a possible "let down". Let me say this... This Bison team is different than any teams I've witnessed in the past handful of years. JD always talks about this team having "it". What ever that is? But he's right, this Bison team has played so many "big" games this season... and experienced no let down the following week. Once and for all, "let down" is not in the vocabulary of the Bison players and coaching staff. Maybe sports writers and Bison fans should just let it go. This is no ordinary DI-AA football team...
So let's take a look at the Bison-Thunderbirds matchup. The Bison have a clear edge on defense, offense, and special teams, while Southern Utah gets the plus for home field. The Bison may be a little road weary, but nothing seems to faze this team. So I'll toss that excuse out the side window. Already dispelled the "let down" thing... Can't think of one reason the Thunderbirds should win this game, so it looks like another good week for the Bison folk... North Dakota State 34, Southern Utah 13.
