The 2005 football team will give us some healthy clues pertaining to the future foundation stability that head coach Craig Bohl has built for on-the-field successes. Bison football fans should get a good glimpse of the highly-regarded members of the 2004 recruiting class. And for this season to be a success, players such as Mike Maresh, Nick Compton, Kole Heckendorf, Zach Harrington, and Joe Lardinois must bring their A-game to the playing field. I'm not saying that the elder statesmen for the Bison don't have talent. By no means... But it only takes one hit on the side of the knee to make a player's promising season turn into disaster. Not only for himself, but a significant injury creates a crisis for his team and coaches. I go on record right now and predict that not all of the junior or senior players on this Bison football team will escape injury through out the entire 2005 football season. If the forementioned young players and others step-up their game, the Bison will be fine and the Bison football program is like your 'All-State' agent.... In good hands.... If not....
Entering the 2005 season, only a few things worry me about the Bison football team. I read and hear people worrying about the offensive line and linebackers.... but personally, I worry more about the defensive line. I worry not so much about the talent level of players such as Rodney Thompson, Justin Frick, Alvin Robinson and Isaac Lavant; but the pure number of bodies available. I know we added JUCO players like DE Michael Loftin and DT Emanuel Jackson and recruited DE Demeatric Fowler out of Illinois, but I can easily discount those players as a real big unknown. Besides the forementioned starters, who on this football team has the ability to become a quality defensive lineman? I really feel that Craig Bohl's coaching staff has lacked in attacting quality defensive line recruits. This definitely is a problem that Craig Bohl needs to address in the near future.
If there is one thing, I can say about the impending 2005 Bison schedule, it is "quality". Not only do the Bison face staunch competition from their Great West Football Conference counterparts, but with Southern Illinois, Weber State, Nicholls State, Northwestern State, and Montana State also on the schedule; so far the Bison will have no "weeks off" this upcoming season. Here's some insight for NDSU AD Gene Taylor... it's time to add a "cupcake" as the eleventh game on the schedule. Ya know, play against an lower quality opponent so the younger players on the roster can get some quality game experience. Depth is a valuable thing to waste and a part of a team that a coach never has enough of over the long haul.
Over the past few weeks, I'm sure all of us heard that former NFL-coach Jerry Glanville applied for the head coaching position at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD., but withdrew his name from consideration to take the defensive coordinator position with the University of Hawaii. Geez, that was a no-brainer. But anyway, hearing his name in the press brought both questions and a memory into mind. The questions went something like this.... Wouldn't it be kinda neat to have Jerry Glanville as an assistant coach with the Bison? Would Jerry Glanville be a good recruiting tool for NDSU? Is Jerry Glanville a football genius or just lucky to ever have been a coach in the NFL (i.e. Bob Babich). My memory of Jerry Glanville involved a Vikings-Packers game a few years back when Jerry Glanville used to do analysis up in the booth for one of the national television networks. The game began with the Packers kicking off to the Vikings. After the Vikings kick-off return, the Packers were flagged for a 'delay of game' or some other penalty. Why? Because the NFL lowered the legal height of the kick-off tee during the previous offseason and the Packers were flagged for using the now illegal taller kick-off tee. And here is what Glanville had to say about the Packers.... "Those Packers. If they ain't cheatin', they ain't tryin'." Just a classic quote....
One last note... Don't forget about the Outback Steakhouse Green & Gold Scrimmage at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 23rd in the Fargodome. Game admission is free, but bring your cash and arrive a little early so you can attend the pre-game Scholarship Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Head Coach Craig Bohl will give is team report for next season. The lunch costs $15 a plate and all proceeds will go to the Outback Steakhouse scholarship fund. Until then... Go Bison.
