Some people might say that this week's 'BI Game of the Week' will be a real dud, but I beg to differ. The inaugural season of Great West Football Conference competition was everything that was expected and more. Three teams; Cal Poly, UC Davis, and Northern Colorado all have a chance to tie for the conference championship or win the title outright. Yes, I said Northern Colorado. If the Bears sweep the two remaining GWFC games against Cal Poly and South Dakota State the Bears will earn at least a share of the conference title. Imagine that.... A 2-7 team after week 10 of the season has a shot at the grand prize. A tough non-conference schedule may not have benefited Northern Colorado's overall record, but it may have prepared the Bears' players for the GWFC home-stretch. The Cal Poly season, after a 7-0 start, has taken a turn for the dump. The Mustangs have dropped the last two games to UC Davis and Eastern Washington, plus Cal Poly could have just as well dropped its game to North Dakota State the week before. Is this a case of the Mustangs peaking to early? Did the Bears find their mojo in the 42-7 thrashing of Southern Utah last week? Speak well of me.... Oh, Fred Bear.... Northern Colorado 27, Cal Poly 24.
Well folks... this is it.... the last week of the inaugural Bison DI-AA football season. This week the Bison travel to Davis, California to battle the Aggies of the University of California-Davis. If the Bison win, their record will stand at 8-3. If the Bison lose, their record will stand at 7-4. This 2004 season can be measured as a success either way.... The Bison have lost their three games by a total of 8 points, so it's not hard to imagine an undefeated 2004 football season. Doesn't take much imagination.... Even though the UC Davis Aggies have been fairly rough on the Bison last couple of years, I have a feeling about this game. After talking with a few contacts close to the team, I get the feeling the Bison coach staff and players realize how close they came to an undefeated season. This game maybe the most important game of the whole 2004.... going out on a winning note. Can't hurt the psychy.... Can't hurt recruiting.... It will definitely be easier pitching an 8 win season to potential recruits, who will be eligible for the playoffs their final two seasons. It's time to end these football seasons of all-most.... time to knock the door down. Starting now.... North Dakota State 34, UC Davis 17.
